The Jason/The Thunderbird...

The Jason on the Allegheny. Photo courtsey of Bob Brown.

I don't know that much about the Jason, but in the 1960's along the Allegheny River near Blawnox there was a night club Called the Thunderbird. I was just a child, but always made sure to get a look at the Thunderbird with it's huge paddle wheel as it sat docked on the Allegheny. What a beautiful boat. Seeing the Thunderbird as we drove by was alway a highlight to any trip down Rt. 28 that ran parallel to the Allegheny on the North shore. One day as we drove by, there to my shock was the Thunderbird completly burned out. I never knew the circumstances of the fire, but from the looks of it, that was the end of the Thunderbird or at least I thought.
One day I mentioned to Bob Brown about the Thunderbird. He said he owned it, or at least what was left of it, meaning the hull. He also told me that he had donated the massive paddle wheel to Station Square in Pittsburgh for their industrial courtyard display. I noticed another paddle wheel over by the Gateway Clipper Fleet too, I'll try to get a picture of it the next time I'm accross the Mon.
