The Rocket

The Rocket on the Allegheny River somewhere between Blawnox and the Highland Park Bridge in the early 1980's. The photo was taken from the deck of the tow boat Principio Photo Copyright Don Henderson 2004.

One of my favorite Tow boats has always been the Rocket. It used to work out of New Kensington, PA on the Allegheny River, but I haven't seen it out that way in a while.
Maybe it's the name that makes it so interesting, maybe it was the cool paint job, but one thing is for sure, the Rocket has very classic lines. This photo was taken early one summer evening from the deck of the Principio on the Allegheny River.

One morning before work as I was parking my Jeep on the Mon Parking Wharf, I spotted a tow boat pushing a few empty barges south near the Smithfield Street Bridge. I figured I'd wait a few minutes and snap a few digital photos as she went by. Much to my surprise, it turned out to be the Rocket, sporting the new paint job of her current owners. So here are a few photos of the Rocket on the Monongahela River in Downtown Pittsburgh 4/4/01. The new paint job is a little more conservative compared to the old paint job and the big letters are gone, but she's still the Rocket!
